Position Description: A client-focused position working with and under the direction of the Director of Civil Engineering to lead the project team, manage the progress, budget, schedule, and client satisfaction for civil engineering projects, and coordinate with architects, agencies, and other consultants in the completion of the work.
Education & Experience Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. Professional Engineer (PE) license in Michigan, in good standing. Must have at least 5 years of experience as a civil engineer.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Must have the ability to utilize project management practices, principles, and tools to manage the work, schedule, and budget for civil engineering projects. Must possess working knowledge of civil engineering concepts and their application, including storm water management, erosion control, design of water and sanitary infrastructure, grading design, and design of HMA and concrete pavements. Must have knowledge of general zoning ordinance requirements and municipal site plan approval process. Must have intermediate skills in the application of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, or similar software, as well as basic skills in AutoCAD Civil 3D, and strong visualization skills. Must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, clients, agencies, and vendors, and work well on a team. Must have the ability to analyze technical information and exercise sound judgment. Must have the ability to deal in a sensitive and professional manner with coworkers, clients, agencies, and vendors, and the ability to retain and dispense confidential information appropriately.
Client Satisfaction
- Establishing and maintaining client communications.
- Creating clear, effective project proposals.
- Determining schedule, budget, staffing requirements, and allocation of resources for completion of projects. Design/Deliverables
- Completing, directing and reviewing project design for compliance with engineering principles, firm standards, client requirements, and municipal/industry standards. Using, and directing the use of, computer-aided design and drafting software and equipment to prepare engineering drawings.
- Researching and analyzing existing reports, maps, as-built drawings, test data, and other information to plan and design the project.
- Preparing cost estimates, project specifications, reports, letters, proposals, and other engineering documents.
- Adhering to Civil Group quality assurance/quality control procedures and seeking opportunities to improve
Budget/Schedule:
- Establishing scope, budget, and schedule requirements for each project and task.
- Coordinating withthe Director of Civil Engineering to ensure personnel and resources are appropriated for each project.
- Directing and coordinating activities of project personnel to ensure the project is completed on schedule and on budget.
- Preparing project reports and budget tracking for management, clients, or others.
- Documenting and obtaining client approval for changes in scope, schedule or fee.
- Providing an accurate accounting of time spent on projects on a weekly basis.
- Seeking and suggesting ways to improve productivity and efficiency, the quality of service, and deliverables.
Physical Capacity Requirements*: Sitting, standing, walking, lifting up to 25 lbs., talking, hearing, finger dexterity and/or feeling, near vision, far vision. Must be able to travel, at times long distances, by car or truck.
Environmental Conditions*: Primary work environment will be in an office working at a computer workstation. Secondary work environment will include client offices, project sites, municipal and public agency offices. Terrain may be level or highly challenging.
